Here is a description of all the different needles that are available and what fabrics to use them on.
UNIVERSAL NEEDLES
General purpose needles. They have a slightly rounded tip.
To be used on woven fabrics for example cotton, polyesters, linen, wool and fleeces
BALL POINT / JERSEY NEEDLES
Has a slightly rounded tip, so they can slip between the fibres rather then cutting them.
To be used on stable knits for example rib knits, doubles knits, Ponti De Roma
STRETCH NEEDLES
Have a round tip and a small hump that causes the tread to create a large loop preventing a skipped thread.
To be used on Slinky knit fabrics for example lycra and spandex
JEANS/DENIM
A sturdy needle with an ultra sharp point.
To be used on Denim fabrics, twills and canvas
QUILTING NEEDLES
Have a very thin long sharp point, ideal for sewing multiple layers of fabric.
To be used on craft cottons and batting
LEATHER NEEDLES
Have a Slightly twisted cutting edge at the point to help easily cut through hides.
Not to be used on any synthetic leather or suede
MICROTEX SHARP NEEDLES
Have a super sharp point that pierces the finest yarns
Perfect for topstitching and super fine fabrics such as chiffon silks and sequined fabrics
